Skylar McSkye

by Charles E Minshall

______________________________

Skylar McSkye
Thought he could fly,
To try to fly
Would Skylar McSkye.

If he flapped enough
Like a bird he could fly,
With a flap of his arms
He would head for the sky.

He ran through the fields
Row after row,
Flapping and cawing
Like an old black crow.

He flapped and flapped
And jumped at the sky,
Flapped and flapped,
But he never did fly.

Skylar sat down
And looked at the sky,
With his chin in his hand
And a tear in his eye.

As a crow he didn't fly
Not even one inch,
So next time he'd try
To fly like a finch.

If that didn't work
He would try again,
He would flap and try,
To fly like a wren.

The hour was late
It was getting dark,
So tomorrow he'd try
To fly like like a lark.

Since it was dark
And the weather not foul,
It could be that he
Could soar like an owl.

Then Skylar thought
"I'm such a fool.
I first should enroll
In a flying school."
