The Edge

by Devon E Mattys

This is a message
From the edge.
I've been there and back,
Covered my hands with soot,
So cold and black,
And my feet have found the glass
Scattered through the grass
And begun to ach.
The falling rain
Calls my name
Begs me come to play,
But I've no energy left today--
I've been to the edge and back.
Some other time,
I'd throw down my knitting
In a minute
To scamper outside and bask, bask.
But now the rain must ask,
And I'll still tell it no,
For I've been to the edge and back.
I've waddled to the edge,
Peeked over the ledge,
And teetered on the very lip...
Begun to slip...
Turned away...
Vowed to return another day...
Back to that edge.
I've been there and back.
