Scarecrow by Mary Ellen SmithIn a faded old red plaid shirt
You're planted here in this dirt
To guard the garden night and day,
Charged to scare the crows away.
Among the golden leaves that fall
You're left alone standing tall
Painted face slightly askew,
In overalls, old and blue.
Your backdrop is the autumn sky
Rich warm colors drawing neigh.
Pumpkins glowing in the sun
Your shadow grows as day is done.
Then in your heart of beating straw
When night is here I think you draw
Aside the darkness and the dew,
Till twilight dances over you. 10/27/2001 Posted on 10/27/2001 Copyright © 2024 Mary Ellen Smith
