Anyone

by Meredith C Hartwell

While I loved you,
but before you knew it,
You told me once how difficult it was
for you to find a girl
who would want to be with you.
And I asked,
"What about her?"
but you explained,
"Anyone could have her,"
and that was not something you'd want.
I wanted at that moment
to offer myself as a likely substitute
But I knew you would not take me
seriously
so you broke my heart slowly
with kind words,
gentle hands,
and uncomfortable silences.

And now you stand before me,
eyes wide and bright
with nervous excitement.
And you lay this at my feet,
this girl that "anyone could have"
and nearly beg my approval,
but you should know
you have always been so much more
than just "anyone"
to me.

This is truly a wonderful piece, I really liked reading it. Thank you for sharing it. It made me think back to all those times when I went through a similar situation. Nicely done. Hit me right in the heart on this one.

I absolutely love this. I've been there, and still going through it. Love is such a compelling thing, and it holds us with-in its grasp, and, for the one we love, or fall in love with, we'll let them go theyr'e own way until they find their way back to you, if they ever do.
