I's and u's

by Meredith C Hartwell

I
don't cry
but I lie
from time to time
And I am lying
in his arms, miss-
ing what could
be, thinking
of you.

My eyes are dry
but my I's cry out
for your you's (u's)
(for your use)
and the us we could have been.

I am reading your heart
in poetry
searching for signs of me
and finding that all your t's are crossed
your i's dotted
your eyes doting
on *anyone* else.
But you never told me clearly
what we will never be.

And if you tell me you loved me
too much to be more
I'll know you're a coward for sure.

But maybe it was just me,
with my dotted t's
and crossed eyes
never seeing you clearly
always loving you dearly
(Always!)

My eyes are dry
but my I's cry out
for your you's (u's)
(to be used)
and the us we'll never be.
