The Last Gift I Will Ever Need

by John D Uzzell

Christmas comes but once a year
We wait for it as we grow
Thinking of what Santa will bring
To sleep we will never go

It's morning! We yell
Time to get up and play
Trashing the front right by the tree
Admiring the new toys we have throughout the day

Every year we wait for the moment
For the day near the end of the year
Accepting what we find hoping it's what we want
Happy for the gifts, but still there is a tear

For what isn't there or for what we don't have
Looking behind the tree to make sure we didn't miss
That one thing we really wanted
Happy for what there is, thanking with a kiss

Time goes on and we accept the well-known fact
Of where they all come from
He is real you know and he lives within us all
Childhood never to leave, in our hearts always to run

Wishing for the one thing not hoping at all
Dreaming of what it would be
It's always here right inside of our minds
Falling to our hearts, and now we see

The gift of what life is and the beauty of what time brings
Understanding what it is all about
Knowing we need to hold it deep within our hearts
Believing without the hint of a doubt

I know he is there and he showed himself years ago
In the winter of '83
My little girl he brought
Christmas is over, I have all the gifts I need

Seventeen this year she has grown so tall
A woman she has become
Keep growing baby girl
You're no where near done
