10,000 cigarettes until oblivion

by Betania Tesch

Flick Click Glow
Bring me the flame child
Promethean heat on the world
Spin me Atlas, Spin me.
Bring the light to me
and let me take it in
Inhale Hold Exhale
it sweeps over me
gentle suicide creeping up.
I want to die 20% of the time
so I'm really just balancing
making a compromise for my future.
One or two more
and the world is sure to die.
Atlas will drop me, coughing.
And I will flick my cigarette
over the edge of the world
and watch the sparks scatter
against the blackness of space.
Laughing softly as all light fades
but for a thin red glow--
the Promethean heat goes on.

I have this, along with a few other favorites, pinned to my office wall. Stunning.
