A Reflection of You

by Cathlyn Cartier

Look at me, and you may see,
A reflection of you or of what you could be.

I have seen the ridicule on your face,
I know that look of distaste.
I hear what you are thinking to yourself,
"There's another example of welfare waste."

Appearance may be deceiving.
Do not judge me for the aid I'm receiving.
I'm a product of the middle class, part of American lore,
Not some drug-addicted, alcoholic, disease infested whore.

I'm an educated woman,
High honors I've achieved.
So why do you scorn me in my time of need?

I'm raising two children on my own,
Struggling to provide for them a home.
Their clothes may not fit perfectly and their shoes may be tight,
But at least I can keep them safe and warm at night.

Look at me.
Look me in the face.
I will hold my head high.
I won't be disgraced.

I am not just another stereotypical case.
I've been in your shoes.
I have stood in your place.

Look at me.
Face your fears.
Save your pity and your tears.

Look at me,
If you dare.
Peer closely if you care.

What do you see when you stop and stare?

It's me, a reflection of you.

Wow...sadly, our society has gotten into the horrible habit of shunning people who are doing all the right things and really do need help and sadly just embracing people who aren't doing anything right and just giving them handouts; it just breaks my heart, but this is a wonderful poem, despite the pain you were in to be able to write it.
