What Happens Next

by Bruce W Niedt

The wind begins to turn, indicated

by the weather vane. The rain washes Ben’s lover’s

body to sea. Marie, vindicated,

climbs the steeple. People under covers

shiver with fear. A tear runs down the cheek

of the vicar. The liquor bottle’s smashed

on the terrazzo. Laszlo's twenty-week crime spree

ends. The men’s crew team’s hopes are dashed

by upstart Yale. A pale Renoir portrait

is defaced. The chaste Minerva’s death scene

ends the play. Today Frederick will forfeit

his fortune. The sun will explode sixteen

hours later. Invaders storm the gates,

and the world resigns itself to the Fates.
