Birthday Poem

by Mary Ellen Smith

A birthday is a special day
Of that, there is no doubt.
The more light atop the icing though
Can be a cause to pout.

When it's too bright to gather close
Too bright and yes, too dire,
Perhaps it'll take more than a wish
To douse that kind of fire!

Ah, but every age is cause to pause
Each age has got its lining.
And though the silver's in the hair
It's the gold that gets refining.
