Almost Home

by Betania Tesch

It's just like everywhere and nowhere
the places that don't really exist
except to keep you far from home.
It's just like here and now
inside of a black shadowed dream
waiting for the moon to speak.
Everything is a memory and a foggy haze
where nothing real or true can happen
unless you come out of your dreams.
It's just one big cloud of expectations
that starts to rain down on you
'cause when all your hope is gone, you're hopeless.
And the moon children, the starry-lipped dreamers
come out to play with you then
and tear off little pieces of whatever is left.
They dance and sing and fascinate you
for a moment or a day, while you wait for the answers
but no matter how long you sleep,
you're still tired when you wake up.
