Hummingbird

by Mary Ellen Smith

Oh hummingbird your quickened heart carries you so well.
Your little wings beat oh so fast that I can barely tell.
You hardly sit and in your flight you swiftly find your way,
Feathered irridesent in the dawn and dusk of day.

If I could hold you in my hand, gentle I would be,
Captured for a moment, you would have a friend in me.
Little one, I must content myself in your delight,
And listen to the music that your wings beat to in flight.

This is so lovely, so light and positive and full of beautiful and tender impressions, "Little one, I must content myself in your delight, And listen to the music that your wings beat to in flight" - it takes a sensitive eye to appreciate what is precious and delicate in nature. Beautiful poem :-)

Mary Ellen, I love this so much! Hummingbirds are fascinating. I have seen them up close and these little birds inspire me. Your poem will go on my faves.
