chasing the light

by Mary Ellen Smith

since the dawn of
time's first light
it's birthed sunrise
caressed our hills
illuminated love
upon our fields.
.
warm and sweet
coaxing the seed.
first to sprout
then to fruit.
.
while underground it
fed the root.
.
the boughs when green
chase the light.
they stretch and grow
in strength and might.
.
Oh! warm the hair
upon our heads.
be fair in night
with moonbeams shed.
.
slow a bit that
we might touch
this graceful light
we love so much.
