Chalk

by Devon E Mattys

[to be read aloud, quickly]

The chalk
talked
aloud to me
and begged--
begged ME--
to set it free--
"Free at last
oh can't I be?
I, the chalk,
so humbly
see
the world
through others' eyes
(would that be a big surprise
to you
if you were to fantasize?)--
to set me free"

It screamed at me
and cried
through the night--
and black
black
waves across
the sky
it moaned, "I'm free..."
