*An Impossible Shape to Hold

by Mainon A Schwartz

There is a fire
In her pale, pale face
And a hunger in her
Meek, quiet body
That belie the aching
Loneliness of an
Impossible shape to hold.
She will die that way
If she can't live it,
But the fire still consumes
Her appetite for life.
Yet looking at her,
We all can see that
Her body is so frail
That soon it won't be
Able to hold the flame.

*(anorexia is a kind of determination, a fire that
burns in search of a body that's thin enough, a shape
impossible to hold. Yet that fire burns through the
body that contains it so quickly...)*
