Perfume

by Richard Vince

Your words sat there
And stared up at me
From their bed of pink

A few of them had run
Where you sprayed the perfume

I remember thinking
How elegant your hand was
And wondering how
You could possibly have
Written so much

You were just a girl
Romantic to the point of naivety
But I crowned you
Princess of my dreams
I felt like I was living in a dream

I didn’t do any of the dreaming
You created a world
For us to inhabit
And a me for you
To share it with
But I was never invited
Not even to visit

When I was young
I dreamed of being
Prince Charming

My dream came true
And I was the dark stranger
From a far off land
Who had come to rescue
You from your tower

It was just a trap
Designed to lure me
Into incarceration with you

I’m glad I saw the real you
Through your words

But I enjoyed the illusion
For a while
