Ever Last, part II

by Richard Vince

The night came...
But you didn't
And I was alone again.
Left to face another day
Without you.

I don't remember being
Afraid of the dark before.
My eyes remained open
All night, as I stared
At the naked ceiling
And the empty space
Beside me.

Then the Sun rose...
I watched it without you
Like I vowed I never would.

But it wasn't me that chose
You not being there with me.

It was a disappointment anyway.

Then I got out of bed
And walked around for a bit.
I had no idea how old
The wallpaper in the lounge
Is - I should replace it some day.

I counted forty seven cracks
In the lounge ceiling...
That room is a disaster
Waiting to happen.

But with new plaster
And new wallpaper
It will be as good as new.
