Sleeping Gypsy

by Bruce W Niedt

That peaceful painting,
Sleeping Gypsy, Rousseau
has split into a dream geometry

that fine black man, asleep
the folds of his robe
rainbow
along his body.

The staff and the
bent lute
lie with him
their length as his.

The moon and that moon-eyed lion
mane blown forward
snuffs at the gypsy’s side
his tail raised
like a curious flag.
