Cottonwood

by Leonard M Hawkes

I know the hiss
Of parched grass,
The scent of sage;
Rattler and rabbit
Eat the dust
At my knees,
Bison and pronghorn
My balsamic leaves;
But I with wet feet
Shade the flat,
And sing my watersong
To the open sky.

The vivid imagery is excellent!
