*pocketful of change

by Mainon A Schwartz

the sunlight is stealthily
creeping through the shutters
but it won't find her sleeping.
she tossed away her nighttime
hours like pennies in a fountain:
a pocketful of change
but no life to spend it on.
darkness comes cheap, but
she can't afford the daylight.
