The Day Heaven Cried

by Adrian Calhoun

Today I stood paralyzed,
numb from shock and pain,
at the edge of the world.
I watched as the world
mourned for the dead,
for all that was suddenly lost,
and for themselves.
In horror and dismay,
I watched it play and replay,
over and over again.
As the minutes turned to hours,
I watched the numbers climb
into the hundreds,
with no sign of stopping.
As hour by agonizing hour passed,
I watched more and more
mourners gather.
And the number of those missing,
continued to climb even higher.
Then I felt the hands of God,
reaching down to comfort us all.
I watched from the edge of the world,
as heavens gates opened.
I saw Gods face,
stained with tears of sorrow,
and all of the angels,
were weeping with us in unison.
I watched as the last of those killed,
entered into heaven.
As the gates closed,
it began to rain in New York City.

September eleventh, two-thousand and one,
the day heaven cried.

A day none of us who watched will ever forget. You have sculpted the horrendous events in bold relief! (How did I miss this poem?)
