young girl in overalls by Gary Hoffmannyoung girl in overalls, worn and dirty
feet dry and dusty and cut and bleeding
from walking this stony earth
where the rivers died so long ago
and the only rain to fall is from lost or stolen angels
so few in number now that all could dance
on the head of a pin in this girl's pocket
large bruises swell her ankles brown and purple
from where she's twisted them against the rocks
and a clown on stilts meanders past
singing to himself of unimportant things
of politics and God and wisdom and freedom
and as he sings the young girl listens
following until he's out of sight
and then sits to rest on a dying man
whose face is torn and sunburned
and time passes so slowly from his pain
that he lives for all eternity
so when eternity comes and his last breath leaves
the girl stands up to walk away again 09/28/2001 Posted on 09/28/2001 Copyright © 2025 Gary Hoffmann
