Colorful Versus

by Bruce W Niedt

I wanted to write verse about color,
And the three that are my favorite hues.
They make all the others seem duller,
Boring reds, and humdrum greens and blues.

I hoped to write a poem of orange,
Color of my favorite citrus fruit.
But nothing would rhyme with it but “door-hinge”,
Whether it squeaks or not, the point is moot.

Next on my agenda was purple,
That of grapes, royal monarchs and knights.
But the closest rhyme I found was “fur-pull” –
What animals do when they get in fights?

Frustrated, I tried to work silver,
Precious metal, or Lone Ranger’s horse.
But trying to rhyme this one is still ver-
y Difficult, without word tricks, of course.

So reluctantly, I threw in the towel,
And images those colors imbue,
For better rhymes of consonant and vowel,
Like “Roses are red and violets are blue.”
