wallflowers and waxed dance floors

by Richard Paez

stop-motion reality
i am
the crumbling ash man
who cries
to put out his own burning embers

i tripped and tumbled
in stop-motion reality
perception under a strobe-light
where everything moves too quickly

by the time my flickering hand
reaches that space where you once were
i grasp only the blinking eddies
you left dizzy in the air
before me

inertia
inertia has always been
not the most trustworthy
but always the most consistent
of all my friends
i stumble and fall
in
stop.
motion.
reality.

a crumbling ash man
who cries
to put out
his own
burning
embers
