Satan made this happen, she said.
And as proof she produced
a photograph of smoke and fire
blooming from the towers,
frozen in the tenth of a second
when it resembled a face,
a devil’s face, she said.

But it is too convenient
to pin the blame on a demi-deity
or even some fanatic
twisting religion to his own ends.
What scares me more was what I
saw in this ashy countenance:
the dark monster of human hate.
