Turning Silver

by Scott M Pratchner

A silver ray of hidden sun
Shines through nature's wrath,
And beckons to a lonely stone,
Along the river's path.

The cautious heart of darkened rock
Is gray and cracked in two.
The jealous river trampled him,
And trees around him grew.

That flash of silver from the sky,
Could make the thunder sleep.
She could make the trees give way,
And the spiteful river weep.

The silver music of her voice
Blazed on trees overgrown,
And set afire earth's desire
To free that dark gray stone.

The sun, at last, has found the rock,
And warmed his heart anew.
And now the stone, just like her light,
Is turning silver too
