Butterflies of the Night

by Alan Mahood

The butterflies of the night
Are scaring the dogs
And they howl.
You thought it was the
Moon, low and full,
Hanging orange over the
Trees, but one of the beagles
Was carried away, and the
Dogs know the
Butterflies of the night and
Howl in fear.
You and I
Turn restless between cool
Sweet sheets and
The butterflies of the night
Circle overhead unseen swaying,
Homing in on our mingling
Breath as the dogs yip and
Howl. We
Hug and caress
And join our souls in
Life's eternal dance of
Togetherness and the
Butterflies of the night
Rise up on the currents of
Our lovemaking and dance
Together to our rhythm,
Rising higher, ever higher, and
The butterflies of the night
Are scaring the dogs and
They howl.
