That Was My Role

by Amanda J Cobb

What's happening?
What's going on?
Everything is swirling around,
changing,
nothing stationary
for me to cling to...

except you.

And even that I couldn't handle,
too overwhelmed
to grasp your hand.
Now I'm lost
in this whirlwind of tears
shed by me,
shed by you.
But I want you to know
that I don't blame you
for not saving me -
that was my role.
It was me
who had to climb the mountain,
me who had to fight the waves.
You were strong for me,
offering a helping hand
and open arms to catch me.
You tried so hard,
but I'm falling anyway.

But I don't blame you
for not saving me -
that was my role.
