Janie

by Amanda J Cobb

This self-serving, ego-boosting,
materialistic high
is driving Janie crazy
'til she wants to scream and cry.

    All the superficial, made-up faces
    and neon-glowing lowlife places
glare into the night, and she tries
    but she can't escape it.

All the ice-cream beauty whores
and cotton candy ladies
are sticking up their noses
as they crash their new mercedes.
    The walking Barbie dolls
    and cut-outs from magazines
    are really all illusion,
    nothing's as it seems.

Still the plastic kings and queens
rule the world with a show of teeth.
A breath from tar-filled lungs
and adoring fans begin to scream.
    Their gold buys them "talent",
    plastic bodies and drastic drugs.
Yet it seems only Janie sees
all the dirt swept beneath the rug.

And it's driving Janie crazy,
for she knows they'll eat the world
until there's nothing real left standing
and the vacant people swallow her.
