In Chains

by Amanda J Cobb

So close to love,
he passed it by,
held down by fear and fate:
that cruel art
which broke apart
his heart now held by chains.

    He raised his eyes
    and begged the sky
    to rid him of that weight -
    the weight of years
    wet through with tears,
    sweat-soaked by hidden pain.

The weight of grief
so heavy with
the past all set in hate;
the weight of which
he could not lift
to free his heart again.
