A Rose Among Thorns

by Amanda J Cobb

-tribute to the Cherokees of the Trail of Tears

A white rose for the suffering,
a white rose for the pain,
a white rose to keep up hope
so more don't die in vain.

A white rose for those who've gone,
a white rose for our fears,
a white rose to lift us up
    along this Trail of Tears.

A white rose for the dead,
a white rose for the dying,
a white rose to inspire those
who've given up on trying.

A white rose for the sick,
a white rose for the cold,
a white rose against the foes
who shared our land of old.

A white rose for the children
lost along the way.
A white rose for the homeland
left behind when we couldn't stay.
