September 11 Poems: Cowardice

by Bruce W Niedt

We call the extremists cowards,
the Muslims whose “holy” mission
was to devote their life and death
to killing Americans.
What they did was unthinkable,
at least to us.
But these fanatics
were not afraid to die.

Somewhere far from the smoldering rubble,
ignorant goons using the flag as an excuse
beat an elderly Sikh man,
because he wears a turban and a beard,
like Osama bin Laden.
It doesn’t matter that he is old,
and not Middle Eastern or an Arab,
and not a terrorist,
only that he is different,
and an easy target.

What happened on September 11
was despicable.
But tell me if you dare:
who are the real “cowards”?
