Preparation for War

by Adrian Calhoun

I watch as these young men,
with weapons in hand,
prepare for what they do not even know.

An eerie night has fallen.
As the drums of war beat louder and louder,
there is thunder booming across the prairies,
with lightning chasing close behind.

They sit silent for a few moments,
after having prepared their gear.
Soon the silence breaks,
they form up ranks,
and march toward their transports.

I stand watching,
chest out proudly,
my jaw square,
heart beating in time with their steps.
Wishing I was among them.

At this moment I say a prayer.
A prayer for each and every young man.
I know that many are a little scared,
some are fueled by their anger,
and they are all going for a cause,
greater than them, or I.

Some, though I pray not,
may never see their families, friends,
or the land they defend, home,
again.

I turn my head,
to hide the tears I shed,
compose myself somewhat,
and show them off with a reassuring smile.

So as infinite justice begins,
I pray for these young men,
for guidance,
and for God to grant infinite wisdom,
to our leaders.

I pray for us all !
