contests

ok, i'll say it. i'm angry. disappointed, really. not that the winners of the poetry contest don't deserve it - i say congrats. but my poem was good.

there's this strange catch 22 about contests and judges and writing poetry, in general. who is really to say that one poem is better than the other? obviously, these contests are based solely on the judges who decide the results. but it's the same with publishing - someone else is reading my work and deciding whether or not it's 'good.' and based on what? what you think sounds best? what you think is sentimental and 'yippee holiday lovey dovey'? maybe that's not what the holidays mean to me. or to others.

deep down, i want recognition because i know that i'm a good writer. but at what price? continual rejection because i don't fit someone's 'standards?' i think that's bullshit.

so, as i said before, congrats holiday poetry contest winners. and no, of course not everyone can win. but i find myself continuously disagreeing with the judges of these contests. there is no 'mold' for good poetry. expand your minds, people.
I am currently Angry

Well, hey! Use that anger... let's do a collab maybe title it "the unmentionables of Christmas" or something equally silly to vent our frustrations with all things contested...*giggle* Maybe all of us that didn't merit a mention should collaborate... ;-D Don't let it get you down! Perpetual hope and all that, ya know. You ARE a good writer.

All I can say is this... I am now 50 years old, I have been rejected for so many things (not just writing) so many times that if I allowed disappointed feelings to stop me, I wouldn't enjoy my life the way I do so much! If you look for validation from an outside source rather than within... you will continue to be disappointed in life Meghan. Keep at it. See the cup as half full, not half empty.

I didn't even have time to enter that contest, but I'm still going to write a Holiday verse anyway. I don't always agree with these ratings either, but I do appreciate the opportunity for us to post/share and read each other's work. I like comments best of all! Namaste and Peaceful holiday Wishes!
