The Journal of Trisha De Gracia

3 questions for Pathetic poets like me....

How often is it that you write a poem, and then at the last second re read and delete the whole thing?

And do you write directly in the site window, or on your own in a paper journal and then edit and edit and then transfer it here?

I don't think I've ever posted a poem that I worked on longer than 1 hour or so. Is that odd?

I'm going to answer question 2 first then go from there. I used to write in a notebook. Besides the obvious reason that my most current book is full and I haven't gone to Border's to get a new one, my book got into bad hands which caused alot of problems for me. So lately, I've been writing my stuff in my email and saving it in my "Waiting to Be Sent" folder. But when I used to write in my notebook, I'd start something and then get scared and re write. The same idea would be all over the book. A blank page is intimidating. The last few pieces I've posted I haven't spent alot of time and didn't "pull out all the stops" for them and they've gotten good response. I took advice from Sabino.

I wrote my last piece directly in the site window using an indelible marker pen - since then, I haven't been able to get it out of my head. Bizarre!

1. Never. I post it all, even when it sucks. 2. I usually write directly in the window, but there are some I write in MS Word because of the format and/or color I may want to use. I rarely edit, if ever. 3. That isn't odd to me at all, since I am like Sabino...they don't take me more than 10 minutes to write.

Very few I've rewritten. Some I found too harsh, so I rewrote those. I write in the window. There are alot of times when I start to write something, and re-write and re-write and finally give up and it never happens.

I don't seem to ever delete anymore. I just have a big folder of rejected phrases or themes or stanzas that I could never make work. Not that I've even written anything lately, but I've always felt like more of an editor than a writer. When I was writing a lot, I always used notepad because I could hold on to whatever I was working on indefinitely. Sure, a few times I had to crank out something awful in a short amount of time for class or what have you, but that's definitely the exception. For me, it's rare to have something that I worked less than an hour on. Different strokes and all that.
