small thoughts on eternal sunshine of the spotless mind

not to be forgotten: one of the things that i find myself constantly overcome by in this film is such an integral part of making the movie work, that it's almost lost in all the other amazing things going on in it. yet, there are moments of absolute clarity where it is thrust into view, if one knows to look for it, and here is what it says: don't forget that joel is in his own head, interacting with memories of clementine that, at their core, are joel himself. joel is saving himself. we can save ourselves from our nightmares.
