First day being pathetic/ hardly the first at all
11/14/2003 09:16 p.m.
Should I be this excited about getting "accepted" to this little community? I feel like such a loser, being so extatic, but here I am, giddy as a 6th grade girl after her first kiss. My friend Morgan told me last night that she secretly wanted to be a poet. I told her that I secretly did too. Of course, we'd need "real jobs", but we can always teach English. That toes the line. That way, we always have one foot in literature. Well, Morgan, I don't think it's so stupid at all. I think you could do it. I would be your biggest fan. Even when you were too important for me to approach you after a show, I would come.
So I have already recieved three warm, lovely comments from people on this site. I feel fully welcomed. I also feel a new addiction coming on. I swear, I love college. I'm at Sarah Lawrence, in New York, and I'm taking my first poetry course will Jeff McDaniel, who is an amazing poet. He has also enabled us to hang out with Olena Davis, James Tate, Mark Doty, and got me into the Bowety Poetry Club for free (he knew the big, burly guy who sells you tickets). Well...I love my life right now. All is good, and all is well. Last night was the Dead Poets Slam at school, which included an amazing two-person rendition of J. Alfred Proofrock (all that good teen angst getting aired), a stellar preformance of several Fernando Pessoa poems in a row, and also, some fresh meat I hadn't been exposed to yet. I am shamefully new to the poetry world, and am extra-ignorant of beat poetry, which I actually love. Anyway, last night, I heard Gregory Corso for the first time, and it was incredible. I want a book of beat poetry now. So long, lunch money.
