For Christine

by Chris Sorrenti

     RIP 1960 – 2019

As we all do
I took for granted
we’d run into one another
at least one more time

I had a crush on you
right from the beginning
a girl from the other side of the tracks
who unfortunately for me
preferred her men that way too

None the less we ran into one another
from time to time
that summer of ‘86
when Cindy and I discovered
the whole Heatherington Road crew
transported a little further north
to Checkers Court
and it was party time all over again
Heaven Metal’s children
raising their own babies
as we used to say
though it wasn’t meant to last

After the gang split up
we bonded spiritually
under entirely different circumstances
though I had had enough of the partying
and headed into treatment
time to clean out and
start all over again

We kept in touch
a couple of years later
only to find out others from the gang
including you
had followed me into treatment
but by then we had changed too much
and when the opportunity finally availed itself
for us to be together
it no longer felt right

I moved on and became heavily involved
In the poetry scene
we lost touch again
as so many of us do
always thinking
we might run into one another
sometime/somewhere
as we did in the early days

But now I guess it will just have to wait
