Amazing Thing

by Chris Sorrenti

It was the most amazing thing
Four o’clock rush hour
And there was you and me on the corner
Just down from the bus stop
In some sort of relationship
Stronger than friends
A new kind of love?
As if secret agents on a special mission
Engaging in communication
Of the highest regard

Rather than joining knuckles
Or shaking hands to say goodbye
You too heading off on one of those buses
We gently slapped our palms together
As others might but didn’t let go
And for a few precious moments
My fingers pressed softly against yours

And it and I felt strange but in a good way
The contact long enough for you to transfer
The beginnings of what felt like
An encyclopedia of emotions thoughts
Opinions and knowledge
But no certainty as to whether
There would be further meetings

And as we did this
I looked down the street at the bus stop
Crowded with people
The glare from the sun and distance
Made it impossible to see faces clearly
From the angle it looked as if
They were all looking at me and you

And I could feel your other self
Among them also wondering telepathically
In waves that connected
The three of us irrevocably
How we could be together like this
Quite natural in that
It was the most amazing thing

Author's Note: Inspired by a dream I had the other night about an old friend I haven’t seen in years. It was quite vivid and pleasant, one which left me feeling wrapped in positive energy upon waking. Why the friend’s other self? Perhaps the way my mind interpreted and rationalized the friend’s new self/old self?

Indeed "quite vivid and pleasant" - you are such a good story teller, Chris. The "secret agents" idea is intriguing. Loved those last two stanzas bringing in an audience - brilliant.

Nice recap of an interesting dream. Makes one wonder what the psyche is actually trying to say!

oh, this is amazing - it dove right in and brought the reader with you onto the street, smelling every smell, hearing every noise, feeling the swell of emotions... brilliant, chris!

A wonderful retelling of a dream many of us might like to have. The start of a relationship, so if'y, and yet the feeling so sure of itself. Very nicely done!

A most pleasant interpretation of a dream. If only all dreams were like that!
