Out of Sync

by Jared Orlando

My eyes meet your eyes
Fall sharply to your lips
And I watch your mouth open
And close, and move, and hold
But the sounds that it’s making
Do not match what I’m seeing
It’s all out of sync
Your hands reach out
But are retracting instead
Everything you are
Has been reversed and distorted
Your legs, they crisscross
Your eyebrows scrunch together
Is it happiness, sadness?
Perhaps something in between
That makes things convoluted
Those simple mundane reactions
Are now overworked and confused
You cough, but it’s sucked in
Laugh, which ends before it begins
I can only wonder, and I must walk backward
Since I’m now walking in your world
Where the days begin with sunset
