don't feel bad

by Lauren Singer

i wanted to tell you not to hold so much.
the weighed down quality of your
"it's all good" dismissals
are sometimes just too hard to watch.

i am not sorry, i suppose.
the inclination that i had been
better, somehow, or more yours
than anyone else's
carried me somewhere good for awhile.
it doesn't matter if it was a lie,
or if you don't wear that shirt anymore.

i need you to know that i'm going to be alright.
it would be easier to sink into this
and let it consume me like wax,
but then,
i want you to be proud of me.

let's just be still, for now.
we both know this is something real
without a voice, but we can hold onto it
without getting vacuumed out and swallowed.
we will always have the berkshires between us
and the extraordinary rarity of the complete truth.

see?

And few know how extraordinary and rare that is, Lauren. I applaud you.
