When I Held You

by John Herzog

When I held you,
for a second, I held the entire world
there was nothing beyond my arms
no cloud nor shooting star
could tear me away
and when you held me,
although I wanted to deny it,
there was no darkness over the horizon
nor in the corridors of the soul
because I was the sun
because that's how you saw me
as if I were shining through the nights
through the tears,
and I'd shine a smile
because of you
and for you I'd shatter the earth and seas
just to arrive at your side,
to reach for the heavens,
and there's nothing I wouldn't give
to hold you once more

Author's Note: I originally wrote this poem in Spanish, which is why the language is somewhat limited. It's far better in Spanish.
