First Few Steps

by Jared Orlando

It is all about
The first few steps
A motive to try
Without knowing
Exactly what you’re
Doing, or need to do
Draped in only a
Newborn skin
As if there were
Only fragile, shaky,
Or no bones at all
Hands spread out
In front of knees
Scraping towards, so
Shakily, a resolution
Exists within a
Crawl, beyond tiny
Tasting fingertips
Hand after knee
After hand after knee
Hand to knee to floor
Attempting, rising
Walking, stepping
You will make it
But only
Once you stand up
For it.

Very evocative display of internal and external struggle. Well done.
