i compartmentalize my relationships.
you are red.
and
they are blue.
perhaps i am just
too afraid,
or perhaps too
middle class to don
the royal shade of
violet...
made by the intermixing
of the two.

and so i keep my friends
in the dark
on your existence.
i'm single as far as
they are concerned.

i'm a loner, as far as
you are concerned...
and maybe since i treat
my life in such a way,
perhaps i am alone.
if i cannot trust the closest
to me to know that
the other exists.
