Stand Still by Alison McKenzieTo my right, a new river glistens
In the rising of a new flame.
There is a call to dive,
And the desire to swim,
But I stand still.
To my left, a black hole,
Spent these last months running
Into this place,
Hiding from possibilities.
How I wish to run now.
The force of that instinct is,
In this moment,
A nearly irresistible power –
But I stand still.
My eyes are closed.
The wind is offering
Gentle support, a melody
That soothes, delivers peace;
The lure of such intense emotions
Quelled
By the decision to simply be,
Twixt the appeal of both worlds
While I wait for right action
To be unveiled in my lonely heart.
I suspect neither choice is “right action”,
That a middle way will appear instead
And that I'll simply be asked
To go forward.
I am in a foreign land,
And I realize
I don’t speak the language.
So, for now,
I stand still.

Posted by Tony Whitaker on 10/04/09 at 02:17 AM Another brilliant tempting tart of words. For what it is worth, there are no contradictions in life. When faced with one, check your premises, one is wrong. Also, there is right and there is wrong and in the middle is evil. But I spout. Your poetry always interest me and I wonder sometimes where they lead.. |
Posted by Glenn Currier on 10/04/09 at 05:25 AM I REALLY like this reflection of your stance amidst the currents swirling about you. I see the wisdom in staying in one place anchored in the moment while trusting Life to deliver directions. I read here too a woman's approach - unlike me who too often jumps in one direction or another because jumping is what I'm spose to do. Thanks for this lovely poetic reflection. |
