Mamo's Electric Blanket by Rusty C Arquette
In the middle of a black moonless night
When all is blowing so cold outside
A little boy wakes up cold and he lies shivering
In a drafty wood-framed cracker house
The darkness in the room surrounds
And frightened, in his bed he lies softly crying
The wind moans through pine slat walls
Both his parents fail to hear his call
He hides deep beneath the bed covers sobbing
Someone comes quietly on padding feet
He feels the radiance of body heat
As Mamo whispers, Child, hush your crying
She bends to help her little shaking man
And leads him by his sleepy hand
Down a hall where their footsteps are receding
He climbs into her soft cloudlike bed
Lavender pillow beneath his head
She pulls him close and he hears her breathing
The cold he felt is quickly left behind
As he revels in this peace of mind
In Mamos embrace he is contentedly nodding
So in a warmth hell never know again
In the arms of one who loved him
In Mamos electric blanket hes softly sleeping

Posted by Kristina Woodhill on 05/11/08 at 06:02 PM Sweet memory! I assume this is grandma?? Flashes all kinds of memories at me thinking of my grandma. Thanks for that. A precious kind of love and comfort.
Posted by Gregory O'Neill on 05/12/08 at 07:46 PM A fine and gentle touch, Rusty. We so need these memories, they recall the innocent us, the long ago us. Lucky if we have them. And here's to Aristotle, who said, "memory is the scribe of the soul." Delighted. Thanks.

Posted by Chris Sorrenti on 05/16/08 at 01:47 PM Excellent combination of subject and use of tight stanza to deliver this baby Rcat. The change of this style from your usual free verse quite the pleasant surprise also.
