against rivers

by Lauren Singer

the hunger of a man
who wrought himself malnourished.
a lover without purpose.

the orange peeled with one smooth gesture,
zest in scented strands of hair,
loose over suzanne.

the vagrant in transition
with calloused feet towards something tangible.
reason or religion.

the broken hands wrung sore
from weak-wounded wanting
for a body only touched in other minds.

the stranger with the mirror
wishing for some familiar thing.
a love that could be claimed.

the weakness, and the blindness
traveling by thrown stones.

the morning she left desperate
with a frantic understanding
that the sailors were just markers
and the river'd only leave her.

Well, the river flows simultaneously in space but not in time. The time flows simultaneously in notime.

Outstanding little images you have here, so round and self contained. My favorite is the second scene of Suzanne, I could almost smell the scent of oranges and sense the aura of the moment. From my perspective the link between all these scenes is the simplicity of life's complex contradictions. We push against the river in vain because we are too easily swept by it's powerful currents, the human nature. That's what I saw. Nicely done.
