We Weren't Meant to Die

by Nikki Benson

“She always told me

‘Just make the money

I’ll take care of the rest’

She took care of all the finances

She just told me to

‘Make the money

I’ll take care of the rest’

I’d try to help her in the kitchen

She just told me

‘Just make the money

I’ll take care of the rest’

She was one of a kind” he said with tears in his eyes

“57 years we were together

Sometime I look to the man upstairs

And say, ‘you’ve got the wrong person’”

I’m so sorry

Please try to hang in there

“I’ll try” he said

With a face worn 80 years,

A sob, a smile

And the hidden tear in his eye
