and then we kept walking

by Lauren Singer

let's lie still awhile,
you can close your eyes if you'd like
but i think that i'll keep mine open
and watch everything in front of me,
and feel all that is right beneath me
in this quiet space, all my own.

there is so much.
there is just so much, and
i swear i can feel it breathing under me,
and here i am, sitting on top of this
giant something that i will never, ever
begin to even understand.

sweet spiral, this black sky goes on forever
before and after us,
it will keep on going, and entertain
the wayfarers that should step upon its grasses,
and stop to look at whatever it is that strayed them
to begin with.

and in this little patch of mystery we found
upon wet feet and torn jackets,
over the brush and through the branches,
i would like to wait a while and
decide if anything ever really did make sense,
and i will feel so small, so small
upon this big mass of something.

and just when i think i can't take it
that the world might cave in and take me with it,
when i feel it exploding like a canon in my chest,
i look over, and you put your arm around me and say
"hey, it'll be okay."

and then we kept walking.

Lost, found, wonder, wander; this is my favorite post from you. Just excellent, Lauren. And a potd suggestion.
