Have You Seen Her Love

by Mike Loftis

Once upon a time my love
you loved me more than now
but then somewhere along the way
I lost your love somehow
I went back down the roads we walked
but could not find it there
All I found were empty roads
with no love in the air
I walked until I heard the sound
of singing in the church
They sang of love eternal
At last I’d end my search
I ran inside and asked the man
if he had seen your love
He said the only love you need
is that from up above
As I walked away he called out loud
My son I’ll pray for thee
I said no just pray I find
The love she gave to me
I made my way along our road
and I came upon a thief
I asked him if he’d stole your love
He said friend I see your grief
and though I am a brigand
there’s places I won’t go
I’ll steal your coin but I’ll not leave
my victim wounded so
I came into a town at last
and found a place to rest
but alas, I could not sleep
for the pain that filled my chest
The matron of the inn I stayed
asked what I was troubled of
I shared my tale then begged of her
Have you seen her love
She took my hand and cried with me
and as we shared our tear
She said I pray you find her love
But you will not find it here
And so it is I write these words
that I’m sending off to you
I’ve still not found the love I lost
and I’ll search until I do
‘til the day I’m laid to rest
and they whisper o’er my grave
here lies the man that lost and searched
for the love that she once gave

It's a great poem and has wonderful rhyme. Sad but that's what poetry is about sometimes.

A beautiful bittersweet ballad! By the way the verse about "love from above" is all you need is very appropo! :)

Some things are just worth going to the end of time for, Mike, as is your poetry. This one goes in the time capsule for prosperity. Pe4ce...

Oh Mike, this is lovely... truly. There is a sure and steady flow to the words, that seems so very natural, like dancing to inner music. But... you know they tell me, as long as you search, you will not find... it is when you stop searching that love finds YOU.... *smiling*... not that I can tell ya for sure...

A perfect masterpiece of a poem in theme and rhyme and form...

Sometimes it feels like the world will never be the same, and no light will ever illuminate in the same way. Nothing tastes right. There is the dull layer of grief covering everything, and it's all in shades of gray. But having looked and not found, I have been blessed to have stumbled upon delight anyway. And it's just as sweet. I loved this poem!

Damn, Loftis... this is just incredible. I like how it has a traditional feel but is so accessible, intimate, heart-breaking...
